Top Skiing Spots in Russia

By on August 13, 2018 in Kamexplore

There are many popular winter activities and sports to participate in in Russia, one of the most popular being skiing. Some great ski resorts you can visit will give you access to prime conditions for this. With long winters and lots of fresh snow, Russia is a great spot for avid skiers.

One of the top ski spots is Dombay, which is found at an elevation of 1650 meters. The resort is located within a mountain glade and grants you terrific slopes and several ski runs or pistes. The runs consist of different levels of difficulty to suit all abilities with the highest mountain peak in this region, Mussa-Achitara Mountain, reaching 3012 meters.

Cheget Ski Park

This is another top spot and is particularly good if you are interested in some extreme skiing as they have some slopes that are at a 45-degree angle! Cheget is open from November to May each year and offers stunning views of the highest mountain in Russia, Mount Elbrus at 5642 meters. The Chegret Ski Park is very popular with skiers who want to challenge themselves and is located in the southern part of the Elbrus region of Russia.

If you prefer gentle ski slopes, then the favorite location is probably going to be the Abzakovo ski resort which is situated in the southern part of the Ural Mountains on the Krykty-Tau ridge region. The Ural Mountains are extremely old and the Krykty-Tau ridge dates back about 600 million years which means that erosion over time has rendered the slopes quite gentle; and that is perfect for beginners and people who do not want the excessively steep slopes, found at Cheget Ski Park.

Bolshoi Vudyavr

If you want a spot that is guaranteed to have a lot of snow for most of the year, about 250 days, and typically remains pretty cold, visit Bolshoi Vudyavr which is a resort north of the Arctic Circle where you can ski almost year-round. Keep in mind that it is very cold here, at about -35 Celsius most of the time so come prepared! Another benefit of this resort is that you can see the spectacular northern lights, the Aurora borealis, when the sky is clear since you are so far north.

This spot is located in the Kemerovo Region which is situated quite far north of Moscow (about 3900 km away). Despite being quite some distance from the capital, the area is still very popular with foreign skiers and is known for the fluffy, soft snow. If you have the time to travel a little further, you won’t be disappointed with this destination.

Another great site for beginner skiers with gentle slopes and good snow. The resort is in the Chelyabinsk Region, also north of Moscow but not as far as Sheregesh. Being slightly easier to get to and with easy slopes, this is the ideal place for new skiers or families looking to get a few extra runs in this year.
