What is Russia and why is it like that? This is a complex issue and ambiguous. Why is it difficult to understand and predict the next move of Russians? Why is this a country that is constantly striving for extremes? Why is it always shaking by various internal disagreements? Both Russian and non-Russian thinkers have tried to answer these questions many times. However, there are some aspects that every traveler needs to know before visiting this multifaceted country.

National Identity

A few centuries ago, the concept of the spirit of the nation or the national soul was created in Europe. This concept was used to explain the differences between nations and behavior of people in history based on a particular collective psychology of the nation that was thought to be influenced by many factors such as landscape, latitude, climate, even anthropological population type, their temperament, and choice at a particular stage in history.

The Russian nation is characterized by a collective way of plains, its soul is “as unfathomable and infinite as the Russian plain.” The Russians have always been different than people from the Western countries. The people of Russia easily succumbed to moods and attacked various historical extremes. Such extremes can be explained by a synthesis of passive feminine and active masculine primacy, which is visible in Russian culture and history for centuries. Such fundamental contradictions create a concept of the Russian spirit that is characterized by active dreaminess and a certain laziness, a desire to rebel and holy obedience to “authority is a gift from God”, self-esteem and modesty turn into arrogance, natural Slavic openness to all cultures suddenly manifests itself suddenly imperialism, and traditional Russian kindness and hospitality.

Connections with the State and Government

Russia can be called the most stateless and the most anarchic country in the world. And the Russian nation is the most apolitical nation that has never been able to develop on its own land, as a result, this nation often gets caught up in conflicts with other countries. The collective passivity of the Russians opposed active participation in the life of the country and avoided decisive responsibility in shaping its future. People were constantly intimidated by strict government, so they avoided active political expression. This is another national feature. Power here has always been an external rather than an internal principle.

Experts claim that Russia is also the most bureaucratic country in the world. The stateless Russian was constantly driven to build an empire that, by its size, ravaged all the nations of the world. All the people’s strengths and efforts were given to it, and there was almost no time left for a creative personal life. The individual personality was mentioned after a huge state with huge demands, and the bureaucracy eventually gained incredible proportions. The empire was as if something separate from the nation, static, eternal: it lived its own life according to its own laws, it did not want to depend on the activities of the people and the opinion of the nation. Such an environment has placed a mark of a certain gloom and oppression on the life of the Russian nation, so the Russians are very communal people.
