If talking honestly, Russia is one of the most controversial countries around the world nowadays. The political regime is strict there and a lot of fake news create a lot of terrible myths about this country. We all heard that it is dangerous to travel there alone because of different gangs of the mafia, so every tourist became a potential target. Another great risk is Chechnya and its terroristic organizations that can make an attack anywhere without any prior notice. Some people are scared to go there because of cold weather, destroyed economies, too much drinking Russians who can be racists or corrupted police. Well, some of these things are the truth while others can be called just myths. Anyway, Russia is an incredibly beautiful country full of historical, romantic or heritage sites that will make you speechless, so forget your doubts, book your tickets and don’t forget to send a postcard to your friends from all these places!

Krenitsyn volcano, Kuril Islands of Onekotan

Have you ever dreamt about escaping the civilization and experience the truly wild and untouched nature? Then Onekotan is that place! The huge sleeping volcano is situated in the middle of the lake. The last explosion of Krenitsyn was back in the 50s and now the volcano is still active, as a result, all farming or touristic activities are banned around the volcano. The travelers need to get special permission from the local government even to enter the national reservation around the volcano.

Karelia

For those who are not afraid of freezing weather, the northern part of Russia will show the pearl called Karelia. This amazing part of the country has been formed by a glacier and the land is surrounded by hill, forests and two well-known lakes: Onega and Ladoga. Despite the unbelievable beauty of nature, this place is full of heritage buildings and cultural sites.

Olkhon Island

Another hidden gem near the borderline of Mongolia is Olkhon Island. This is called the fourth-largest lake-bound island on the planet and is well preserved, so travelers need to put lots of effort to reach this place. Olkhon is situated in the middle of Lake Baikal and can be reached overland or by sea. Because of the great natural isolation, the island is untouched by humans and still has it‘s authenticity. There are just a few spots around the world that would be so empty and natural, so visiting this place would be an absolutely new experience.

Lena Pillars

The 40 km long wall of vertically elongated rocks that can reach up to 250 meters high along the Lena River in Yakutia will give you a sense of being in a fantasy movie such as The Lord Of Rings. According to the scientists, this wall of rocks was formed 500 million years ago and is protected by the list of UNESCO World Heritage. The folktales of the Yakutia region tell many stories about these rocks and they are a symbol of love and bravery for the local people.
